James Madison University, or JMU for short, is a public coeducational research university located in Harrisonburg, which is the county seat of Rockingham County, situated in the US state of Virginia, and an independent city in the Shenandoah Valley region, with a population estimated at a number of more than 44 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census. It is also the core city of the Harrisonburg, Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area, which, in 2008 had more than 118 000 people, living within its limits.
JMU was founded in 1908, as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, adopting its current name in 1976. The university offers its students more than 100 degree programs on the bachelor's, master's, educational specialist and doctoral levels, through 7 colleges and 78 academic programs, among which there are: the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Business, the College of Integrated Science and Technology and The Graduate School.
James Madison University is nationally recognized for many of its educational programs offered, the U.S. News & World Report ranking it as the top public (4th overall), masters-level university in the South for 14 consecutive years, while Forbes placed it 22nd in the nation, among public colleges.
Athletics
JMU's athletic teams are known as the James Madison Dukes, who compete in the NCAA's Division I (Football Championship Subdivision for football), the Colonial Athletic Association, and the Eastern College Athletic Conference, in various sports, for both men and women, including basketball, baseball and field hockey. The James Madison Dukes have experienced success in many of their sports, over the years, including in football, in which they won the NCAA Division I-AA national title in 2004, with a 13-2 record, being the only team in history to win the title after playing four straight road playoff games.
